Citizen Sensor, developed by Parson's student Joe Saavedra,
is an environmentally sensitive wearable that allows a collective of eco-conscious citizens to collect, monitor and share their recorded environmental conditions.
The wearable is a modular system designed to work with a variety of "plug and play" sensors. Currently the sensors can monitor the levels of carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), sound (microphone – noise pollution), light (photocells – light exposure), temperature (thermometer), humidity, and alcohol SVS modules. In addition to the environmental data, the user's location and date/time are recorded.
The data is then shared online in the hopes of nurturing "an understanding of lifestyles, and lead to communal sharing of knowledge about each other and our physical world. "
Currently the system requires users to upload their data online which is then visualized using google maps and google earth.
Saavedra takes a DIY approach and has his sensor system available for purchase
