Fabrickit

Fabrickit, a new e-textile development kit from Studio 5050, will be launched at the Maker Faire NYC.

Fabrickit

The kit is a fairly simple e-textile kit that allows you to add LEDs to textiles. What separates FabricKit from the Lilypad and Aniomagic family is that the FabricKit system forgoes the use of conductive thread for conductive ribbon. The conductive ribbon is sewn ( I assume) onto the electronic modules they call "bricks." The ribbon is made from tinsel wire (not conductive thread) & polyester hence it makes me question its washability. The upside is that it has virtually no resistance.

The LED bricks themselves are designed to accommodate a variety of LEDs from SMD LEDs to standard LEDs. The bricks will be available as plain circuit boards onto which you can solder your LED of choice or will come with an LED already in place.

The most exciting tool in the kit is the rechargeable 5V coin cell brick that charges via USB. The coin cell brick can be connected via conductive ribbon, thread or traditional wire.

The kits will be available online on September 24 or you can pick one up at the Maker Faire.

If anyone grabs one from the Make Faire, I'd love to get your full review.

Hi, Zach here - one of the developers of fabrick.it. Thanks everyone for your interest! The site is nearly done now and we have pricing information up for the kits and individual bricks: see www.fabrick.it

About those holes, the 3-wire connectors can be used with either conductive ribbon, conductive thread, or wire. Each connector has a number of holes to facilitate soldering or sewing ribbon, thread, or wires to it.

The ribbon itself can be soldered and holds up very well to washing (no fraying!)

no unfortunately it's not on the site yet. the site doesn't seem fully developed yet as well. You'll get a peak at the Maker Faire.
