Heatswell is a new material invention by Amron Exptl. that is paper-thin in it's inactive form and swells into a 3-D shape when activated by heat (an endothermic reaction). I believe the reaction works only once (doesn't return to it's original state once it cools).

It currently is being marketed as coffee insulator that grows a 3D logo when you fill it with your favorite beverage of choice. The resolution of the logo is quite poor but the advantage of this material (from what I can tell from the above video) is that it can take on more abstract and organic shapes.

I love discovering new materials to play with and this may just me one to add to my palette. I'm curious how you "set" the design or pattern that it morphs into. Typically, in SMAs you set it using heat at a specific temperature — wonder if this new material works in the same fashion.
