Interactive Fashion Gets Personal

E-motion is an interactive fashion project developed by ten students from the Fashion, Product and Interface Design Departments at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and the Institute of Fashion and Textile Design (IBT).

The project resulted in eight visionary outfits at the intersection of design, art, science and philosophy. In these wearables, clothing is utilized as a communication device that reflects the body’s inner emotions or its impressions from the outside world.

I'll be covering these projects in detail throughout the week.

Beginning with one of my favorite projects, Outsourcing (pictured above) is an expressive shape-shifting hood that references the senses and feelings of a person in an abstract way. It subtly transforms and changes shape via shape memory alloys. The project was developed Max Schäth. I love the modular/origami-eque aesthetics of the hood along with its beautiful movement.

Dis.appear by Theresa Lusser

Dis.appear is a wearable technology project designed by Theresa Lusser that blends its wearer into the illuminated evening landscape of the city.

The coat illuminates when the wearer pauses and disappears when the he begins to walk again. An integrated accelerometer activates the LEDs, and the brightness is controlled by two light sensors.
