Currently on display at the Technosensual Exhibit, the Dutch design duo Local Androids (Leoni Baauw and Cor Baauw) created a garment that looks and functions as a "breathing artificial skin."

Aptly titled "Like Living Organisms" the simulated veins on the garment gently pulsate via air pumps. As another person approaches, the pulse becomes more rapid as a symbol of excitement, threat or perhaps even love.

When touched, the neck piece in the garment deflates revealing its vulnerable side.

Detail of painted skin

The simulated skin, painted by hand, looks eerily realistic and it's gentle movement is fascinating vision of skin as a soft, expressive exoskeleton.
