New E-textile Kits from Sparkfun

This weekend at the Maker Faire in Austin, I got my hands on the new e-textile kits from Sparkfun.

The Lilypad E-sewing Kit is a great starters kit for individuals tackling their first wearable LED project. The components in this kit can be used for either the Rockstar Headphones or the LED Bracelet in Fashioning Technology.

Kit includes:
• 5 LilyPad Bright White LEDs
• 3 LilyPad Button Boards
• 2 Coin Cell Batteries 20mm
• 1 Coin Cell Holder
• 1 Spool 4Ply Conductive Thread.

For all you pros, there's the LilyPad Pro Kit.

The Pro kit comes with everything you need to get started with the Lilypad Arduino:
• LilyPad Mainboard
• LilyPad Power Supply
• LilyPad USB Link
• Mini USB Cable

If you're unfamiliar with the Arduino programming environment, I would recommend this handy little book "Getting Started with the Arduino" by Massimi Banzi (a co-founder of the Arduino Project). This book is fresh off the press so get it while it's hot!

OR you can always build your own step-up circuit. Here is an example of a step-up DCDC converter generates 5v from one AAA battery.

perhaps it's the "razor and razor blades business model"? ;-) you have to battle this one out with the Spark Fun folks.

you can always make your own soft battery pack (fabric power supply tutorials here) BUT the benefit to using the Lilypad battery pack is that it is short circuit protected.

Thanks, that makes sense. My next question was 'how come a AAA battery holder costs $15 ? ' :)

You have to use the Lilypad power supply. If you look at the image, there is additional circuitry on the board that steps up the voltage I believe.

Lilypad Power Supply

I'm probably being thick here.

I thought AAA batteries were 1.5V so I don't understand how the Lilypad power supply can run the Lilypad.
