Fabrikan from roma on Vimeo.

I've seen plenty of stills of Fabrican, the sprayable instant textile, for years now. The technology was patented nearly a decade ago and yet hasn't found its place in the market. When it first emerged, it caught the imagination of many a designer interested in super-synthetic high-tech biomaterials.

I stumbled upon this video a few days ago and I was shocked at how in action the material appears rather mischievous, almost violent, akin to the ferocity of a spider wrapping his prey. The video is pretty remarkable illustrating the sinewy fibers enveloping the model in a white cocoon.

Will the materials of our future fundamentally have a synthetic personality? Will we describe our future silks as "sinister" and chiffons embedded with shape-memory alloys as "graceful" or "clumsy"?
