Textile Inspiration: Beautiful Animated Textiles Using Small Motors

These lovely textile experiments by Meg Grant will certainly inspire you to start adding a bit of animation to your clothing.

Animated Textile

Meg began by creating folded paper patterns (example can be found here) that she then re-created with fabric. Using a small motor, the fabric structure opens and closes.

Another wonderful experiment uses a motorized bead encased in a piece of industrial felt.

 Motorized Bead

Both these experiments are quite simple and use inexpensive motors as an alternative to shape memory alloys which are often difficult to use.

Thanks Meg! You've got my imagination spinning (sorry for the bad pun!)

hey rachel, i used pager motors, sometimes called vibration motors or micro motors. they have a weight attached to the axis so that they vibrate when they spin. you can remove this weight easily by heating it (i used the gas flame from my oven) and pulling it gently with pliers at the same time. then you can solder crimping beads to the axis!

This is awesome, Meg. I found the additional video you mentioned. What kind of motor did you use?
