My name is Hilary Hayes and I have just finished my third year studying Industrial Design at OCAD in Toronto.
During the winter, I began creating wearable technology projects and have decided to pursue my thesis is soft circuitry.

Breathe was my first major project.

Breathe 3.0
2009-2010
Lilypad Arduino, temperature sensor, conductive thread, bright white LEDs, purple wool yarn

The Breathe Project is focused on creating awareness of our own breath and the breath of others as a way of reminding and being reminded of the delicacy and life force of each other and of ourselves.

As the wearer exhales while wearing the scarf, a glow sequence is initiated.

Love,

Hilary Hayes

There are no wires in this design, only soft conductive thread was used, and it is very comfortable for wear in cold weather since it is knitted from 100% wool.
I have never had any issues with resistance either :)

This is a fantastic, clever design highlighting one of the few silver linings on our cold Canadian winters. :) Highlighting people's breath reminds me of their warmth and vivacity.
It's so great to see a designer adapting their work for the cold! Did you have to make any special considerations for the cold in your design? (I imagine exposed metallic wires would stick to skin in very cold temperatures? Is managing resistance in your circuits tricky?)

Yes, I will be at the TWM this week, see you there! :)

This looks very cool, Hilary. Are you coming out to the Toronto wearables meetup next week? If so, you should bring the project. It would be great to see it in action.

Well, it maybe that you are waaaay ahead in your thoughts about the future. Sometimes being a pioneer means walking alone and being remembered as being the FIRST!
I know what will cheer you up, go to http://trendhunters.com and in the NEW IDEAS box type in LED clothing and then type Emotion Based Innovations. You are no alone in your vision!! Get with like-minded people and forge full steam ahead! I think your idea is brillant! And when I saw it (the scarf) I instantly wanted one.

Thank you so much la kecia tibbs! I am so grateful for all of the support that my projects are being shown online. I am currently a design student and I am not receiving such a warm welcome for my projects at school...

I think this is AWESOME. The paradigm of design and technology are fusing and you are a pioneer. I was just telling my husband how fashion is going to have LEDs embedded within the fabric like TRON. Everyone is going to be wearing it. Especially the younger generation (13-19.)
